Breast injuries are more common than many realise, especially for women participating in high-impact sports. While most breast injuries heal on their own after a few days with regular monitoring, they can still take a toll, both physically and mentally. The pain and discomfort can significantly decrease your confidence and overall enjoyment of your sport, making it harder to perform at your best.
Interestingly, a study by QPSPORT and Sheffield Hallam University revealed that many women tend to “suck it up” when they experience breast pain or injury. Rather than drawing attention to it, they often downplay their injuries, with many saying they “didn’t want to make a big deal out of it” or let others know they had been hurt. This silent suffering not only impacts performance but also highlights the stigma around discussing breast injuries in sport.
A recent study in the US found that 47% of college-aged women participating in sports reported suffering a breast injury at some point. Shockingly, only 2% of those women reported using breast protection. This shows a clear gap in awareness and action when it comes to protecting this vulnerable area.
It’s important to acknowledge that breast injuries are not something to brush off. Taking preventative measures, like using proper breast protection, can not only help prevent injury but also empower you to play confidently without the fear of getting hurt.
